The
Maldives - an equatorial island republic in the Indian Ocean. 11822 islands
make up the country, which stretches over 871 kilometers.
The
tourist is mesmerized by the country's distinct geography. Reefs with bands of
color, little jewel-like islands bordered with whitest soft sand and surrounded
by the purest shallow waters imaginable. Only 200 of the atolls' islands are
inhabited, with a few resorts on each atoll and some islands used for industry
and agriculture. The Maldives are not simply beautiful above water. The
Maldives is home to around 5% of the world's reefs, which are bursting with
color thanks to the soft and hard corals that make them up. A thousand
different fish species can be found on the reefs.
